Inspired by the Gond Art form celebrates, Jangarh Singh Shyam, who was born into a Gond Pardhan family, in the Madia District of Madhya Pradesh and made significant contribution to the evolution of the art form.
Superimposed against the motifs in this artwork is, Jangarh Singh Shyam, who was born into a Gond Pardhan family, in the Madia District of Madhya Pradesh. Growing up, the artist, was lovingly called ‘Kanwa’ (crow) for possessing an inquisitive mind.
Once, then contemporary artist, Jagdish Swaminathan, encountered Jangarh’s work, the duo’s relationship built steadily, to ensure the alliance of a lifetime. Under Swaminathan’s mentorship, Jangarh Singh Shyam, explored and improvised to add unconventional elements to the Gond style.
Taking inspiration from the rhythmic vibrations in most Adivasi music, Jangarh’s artworks were crafted with intricate dots, dashes and waves, a distinctive style which he created, known today as ‘Jangarh Kalam’. The mysticism of Gondi folk tales, deities like Bada Dev, and flora and fauna often found expression through his artworks.
While his untimely death, raised questions over the exploitation of indigenous artists, ‘Jangarh Kalam’ continues to be carried on by artists of today, as a legacy.
