The township of Nathdwara worships Shrinathji, the 7 year-old-form of Lord Krishna who holds up the Govardhan Hills with his little finger. As the legend goes, he emerged from the hills to protect the people.
Amidst a turbulent political climate, in 1665, when the temples in Vrindaban faced the threat of being demolished, the custodians of the Srinathji idol left in search of a new safe haven.
When they heard that Maharana Rajsingh of Mewar had agreed to provide the idol refuge, the custodians, undertook an arduous 32-month journey to Mewar with it. However, the wheel of the chariot got stuck in the mud at Sihad and Maharana Rajsingh recognised this as Lord Krishna’s divine will to settle down in Nathdwara, on the banks of River Banas.
Countless temples with distinct architecture have since been erected here in his honour, all dedicated to the Pushti Marg sect.
The chariot in the artwork mimics the shape of a lotus, the same as Lord Krishna’s spiritual home. Born in mud, lotuses bloom beautifully as they transcend the surface and therefore, symbolise tenderness and purity. They form an integral part of the art in Nathdwara.
Peacocks remain another recurring motif in Pichwai due to their association with Lord Krishna. The peacock feather symbolises wisdom and the Lord’s love for Radha, among other things.
