I was never invited to go grocery shopping with Maa.
She usually came home with bags heavier than her own weight.
I used to wonder where she got all that strength from.
And now it was my turn.
At the end of my block was the bazaar.
I skipped the first vendor because I remembered Maa telling me so.
I didn’t know why. But it has something to do with having choices.
And that’s how I met Ramesh Kaka.
He was a father of five, moved from his hometown to make a living in the big city.
I was far away from home as well.
Bidding the south goodbye, I made Mumbai my home.
And that’s one thing we shared in common.
The other was that neither of us understood each other very much.
When I asked him in my broken Hindi, “Ek kilo Bhende”
He looked puzzled.
Flustered, I pointed at a basket of long, green Okra.
He laughed and said, “Oh yeh toh Bhindi hai madam!”
From that awkward encounter came several Sundays of knowing Ramesh Kaka.
And now I know why I always skip the first vendor.
