A shared bond

Just as the day was breaking, Sita entered Ganga’s shed. Ganga was patiently licking her calf clean.

As Sita watched Ganga and her calf, memories from the last two months flooded in.

Ganga was the last of Sita’s cows. She had to sell all her animals one by one to raise money for her husband’s treatment.

Sita was almost forced to sell Ganga as well. But the nationwide lockdown stopped her from doing so.

As markets and shops remained closed, the ration became scarce. But thanks to Ganga, Sita didn’t have to worry much. Sita’s family supplemented their food with Ganga’s milk. They even sold some of it to the neighbours and earned some money. If it was not for Ganga, they couldn’t have survived the crisis.

A bellowing Ganga brought Sita back into the present.

Sita had made her decision. She will never sell Ganga, never ever.
