Mother nature
by David Oku
She doesn’t show us her strength, so we assume it doesn’t exist.
She shies away from the spotlight, we assume she has nothing to say.
She serves, relentlessly, so we assume she never feels weakness, pain or lethargy.
She gives birth with love, so we assume the agonising, nerve-wrangling pain is mild.
She chooses not to raise her voice, so we assume she can’t.
But when she roars, when she protects what she loves, when she decides to stand up and fight, all of life will fall at her feet.
Don’t take her for granted.
Birth of the Earth
by Arko Saha
In the beginning, there was only water. Baski Mata was born on a lotus leaf, amidst turbulent waves. The Gods went to her for a solution on how to survive in this water-swamped world. Baski Mata cried, 'Boram Burha's son is Parihar. Kill him and from his blood and bones the world will be born.’
They approached Boram Burha, asking for a gourd. But alas, they had forgotten weapons and tools to kill his son.
They went to Dharam Deota, Boram Burha’s powerful father. He took dirt from his body and made a tiger. He instructed it, 'Go, Brother Tiger, and eat Parihar as he goes for water.'
Meanwhile, Parihar heard these plans for his death, and prepared with an iron bow and arrows. The tiger was one step ahead. He was hiding. An exhausted Parihar cautiously approached the stream for a drink of water.
The tiger attacked, and in moments, Parihar was dead. The Gods picked up his body and swung it round. Where Parihar’s blood spilled, the Earth was formed.
