The Hirakud Dam, the longest earthen dam in the world, is built across the Mahanadi River

The majestic Hirakud Dam was among the initial multipurpose projects undertaken by independent India. Complementing the glory, the recent introduction of water sports at the dam has added to the tourist footfall. The earthen dam, while controlling flooding from the Mahanadi River, also irrigates approximately 75,000 square km of area, making it an infrastructural feat of immense global prominence.
